5 Actions to Take When You Don't Know WTF to Do

So when I polled a huge chunk of my audience, I found out a huge chunk of you wonderful people universally struggled with 1 big problem:

This is something everyone from the beginners to the most complex business struggled with. Confusion is the most dangerous feeling when it comes to business because confusion is the most paralyzing.

Once we decide that we don’t know what to do, we don’t do anything. (TWEET THIS!)

Sound familiar?

Now one of the gifts (curses) of entrepreneurship is that for the most part you won’t be 100% clear. We are all just trying to figure it out. So how can we be in that constant state of confusion and still get things done?

How do you “get shit done” when you have no clue wtf is going on or where to start?

Here is my short guide to figuring it out.

1. Stop researching

I committed to writing a fiction book this summer and I kept asking questions. I kept researching. I started reading a book on outlining. As I learned more about book writing I got progressively more confused, unsure and doubtful that I could ever get it done. Before all that I was like “OH I TOTALLY CAN WRITE A BOOK.” WHAT HAPPENED?

You think you know what is going on but OH! There is another theory! Oh! So and so said this! Oh, this person I know is doing it this way.

The more you know, the less you do. (TWEET THIS!)

Confusion is actually a result of having too much information you don’t know what to do with. (TWEET THIS!)

Action: Put the Google page AWAY.

2. Get clear about what you are REALLY getting confused about -- most of the time it is not what you think and you might not actually be confused but afraid

I’ll use myself as an example. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with the screenwriter section of my life and I’ve been feeling endlessly confused. I wasn’t sure what to do next or what contest to apply to next and so I blamed overwhelm for not taking action but really I was just disorganized. I had a bunch of random pins and notes everywhere and nothing was centralized so of course I was confused! I didn’t know where to look or go next.

Here is my favorite confusion buster trick:

Ask yourself “why” constantly. So you are confused. Why? Once you get that answer ask yourself why again and eventually your confusion will unravel itself and you will go in a very specific direction.

3. Don’t get off on your confusion

Confusion feels goooooood. I know no one would ever admit it, but there is something so comforting about not knowing what you should be doing. You can research. You can blame/ask someone else. You can turn your brain off and just be confused.

You don’t have to act. You don’t have to put yourself out there and risk being vulnerable. It is perfect!

This is where most business hang out for 1-2 years before the big show (of having a business really happens).

Action: Give your confusion a time limit. How long are you going to ride the confusion before it is time to get off and do something about it? Seriously pick a DAY. Kind of like your “leave your job” date.

4. Talk it out

So I get this thing called Gunk Brain. Gunk brain is when your brain is SO full of information and decisions and wtf that your head feels heavy like you are carrying a lot around with you. You know when you feel super tired all the time and don’t have energy for your business? That is gunk brain.

My remedy: Talk it out. Find a business bestie, buy them a drink and justTALK. IT. OUT. The more you talk, the better you will get at figuring out. This is essentially what coaching is, right? You talk and talk and talk and at some point things make sense and you start developing some action steps.

5. Create a plan and take some type of action

So whenever I am confused, I create a timeline (learn how to create one here) that helps keeps me focused. These actions don’t need to solve THE problem you are having but taking action AROUND that big sticking point of your confusion usually unclogs the rest.

Confused about your offers? Write 5 blogs for the next few weeks! Unsure what to do next? Interview some old clients.

If you are always taking action, your confusion doesn’t have to be a huge deal.

Above all else know that confusion is just a part of the entrepreneurial game and it will happen. A lot. The key is figuring out what to do next.

Sound off! What are you most confused about right now?
