Wasted Time, High School (Business World) And Other Lessons Learned After Snacks
Lately, I've noticed that I have this tendency to eat something really good and then write something smart on Facebook. Most of you are not Facebook friends with me so you don’t read my post nom wisdom (?!) SO I figured that this week’s newsletter theme is:
STUFF SHENEE SAYS ABOUT BUSINESS AFTER SHE EATS A DELICIOUS SNACK
Let’s do this:
Something I said on Facebook after eating a ricotta zucchini muffin:
You know how in high school, you'd automatically absorb the reputation of a lot of your friends? Like, if you had a bitchy friend, everyone starts to think you are a bitch too? I think business is like this too! If you surround yourself with people who do/act in ways that you don't agree with, people are going to start connecting you with those people. I've been intentionally anti-social for this very reason. Don't hang out with someone just because you think they are popular but secretly think they are assholes. People will start to think you are an asshole too.
AND nobody wants an energy drain. If you surround yourself with negativity and grossness, it is going to creep into your business.
I only roll with people that make me laugh, create amazing things and don't get off on being mean. I like to think that makes my business a more positive and happy place.
Addition: You don’t have to suck up to people you don’t respect. Respect is a two-way street. It also doesn't ruin your reputation to respectfully ignore/distance yourself from people. Trust me, I knowwww.
I wrote this while eating a crepe:
Business owners: please don't be tempted by the dark side.
Being kind (to yourself, to others, to other businesses) and staying focused is always the best way to go.
Knowing what everyone else is doing, saying and launching and having an opinion about it will not help you, it will just be a distraction.
Trust me, I know.
Addition: “ KEEP YOUR EYES ON YOUR OWN PAPER” -- Things I say to myself!
After some chicken tikka masala:
When it comes time to sell your offer, practice using catch all words and tell stories. Instead of the word "self-love" describe what it looks and feels like! Instead of saying "inner peace" or "leveraged" take your customers through a day of life when you have these things. Tell more stories.
Addition: Practice eliminating words from your vocabulary when you write. Ever notice that I don’t actually use the word “branding” that much? I try to challenge myself to show and not tell. It is harrrrddd, but one of my #1 copywriting tips. If you need help with this, do a 100 People Project. I started my 100 People Project a LONG time ago when I was working as a copywriter and wasn't sure what I wanted to do next. By talking to people and listening to how THEY talked about their brand problems, I was able to create copy that sounds like them and not me. Want to do your own 100 people project? You can grab it here.
After some delicious Thai food:
I know this sounds corny but in business there is no such thing as wasted time, just new information. I can't tell you how many times I've spent hours -- days on something just to scrap it and have it not happen for whatever reason.
Case in point: MY PILOT. Those 2 hours refreshing and refreshing and nothing happening. But I do have a lot of new information.
There is risk required in every situation and sometimes you just gotta get in there, yo.
Addition: for people who don’t know, my good friend Melissa and I applied for the HBO fellowship. After an all-nighter and 2 hours of refreshing, it just did not work out! WOMP. WOMP. Instead of calling the whole thing a waste of time, I decided to take the lessons and move on.
So let’s say that you just spent hours and hours on a THING and realized that for whatever reason it just isn't gonna work out. I know it can feel like a HUGE waste of time, but it never ends up being that way. I have learned something from absolutely every experience I have ever had….despite the suckiness.
AND THAT concludes STUFF SHENEE SAYS ABOUT BUSINESS AFTER SHE EATS A DELICIOUS SNACK.
Food makes me a little smarter! :)
